The vision of the Physical Education Faculty is to promote the inclusion and excellence of the next generation of athletes here at Thrybergh Academy. We seek to offer a broad and balanced curriculum which meets the needs of each and every student. Whilst we recognise the importance of skill development and performance, we also want the students to succeed in other areas such as subject knowledge, leadership and officiating.
Throughout all the key stages we aim to;
- develop competence in a range of physical activities
- ensure our pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time, engaging in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives
In Y9 pupils are advised by PE staff to study the KS4 course that closely meets their needs to maximise both enjoyment and progress. Pupils will either study GCSE PE, BTEC Sport or alternative PE, all of which give the students the opportunity to learn in different ways, develop life skills and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
The PE Department offers an extensive range of extracurricular activities providing pupils with the opportunity to participate in sports outside of lessons and go on to represent the school, region, county and more. The school takes part in a number of District and County leagues on a regular basis giving pupils the chance to compete against other schools. Sports include; Football, Futsal, Netball, Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Cricket, Trampolining, Rounders, Tennis, Athletics, Rock Climbing, Caving, Canoeing and many more. An annual Sports Awards Evening takes place at the end of the summer term to celebrate all the sporting achievements that the school and pupils have achieved throughout the year.
PE groups are set according to ability and all pupils are challenged to reach their full potential. More Able pupils and our Young Sports Leaders are given the opportunity to further their understanding of performing skills and by leading, coaching and officiating peers or younger pupils. Primary partnerships create ideal opportunities for our Young Leaders to build on their sports leadership experience.
In PE lessons, students regularly take part in a wide range of Outdoor & Adventurous Activities which include; Rock Climbing, Archery, Geocaching, Orienteering, Canoeing and Kayaking. The older students also have the opportunity to use our fleet of 11 kayaks and 6 canoes. Introductory sessions are run at a local country park before students challenge their new skills at other venues around South Yorkshire. We also run an annual trip to Pinkery Youth Hostel on Exmoor each year. This is open to all students from Y8 and above. The students have the opportunity to try a range of activities including Surfing, Mountain Biking, Coasteering, Rock Climbing, Pony Trekking & Geocaching.
