TA Science Club

This week in Science Club, students explored chemistry and physics concepts linked to magnetism, viscosity, and polymers.

Activity 1 – Magnetic Superhero Scene

Pupils followed instructions and demonstrations to create their own magnetic superhero scene. Using a laminated city or superhero background, a superhero cut-out attached to a paperclip, and a magnet taped to a wooden stick, the challenge was to make the superhero move across the background using only the magnet – without touching the picture. The students enjoyed experimenting to get it working perfectly.

Activity 2 – Investigating Viscosity

Next, pupils explored how different liquids affect movement. Using small beakers filled with water, oil, and golden syrup, they pushed paperclips to the bottom of each and then used the magnet to try to move them. They observed which liquid made it easiest or hardest to move the paperclips and explained why, linking their observations to the concept of viscosity.

Activity 3 – Making Slime (Polymers)

Finally, pupils applied what they had learned to create slimes of varying strengths. Working individually and in groups, they experimented with different amounts of ingredients to adjust the consistency, and then explained the changes they made and why.

It was another fantastic session of hands-on STEM learning, well done!
