The Subject Way

Our subject has a ‘Subject Way’ at the heart of it. Our Subject Way is designed to help students become young subject specialists. The Subject Way has two main purposes:

Firstly, to teach students the vital skills they need to achieve their full potential and gain the very best grades they can. Secondly, to teach students how each subject relates to the wider world, incorporating the life skills they will learn.

It is our belief that knowing how what you learn links to the wider world brings a subject to life and therefore improves overall understanding and engagement.

Why study IT?

All students study ICT in Y7 and Y8 where we cover the KS3 national curriculum for computing. In year 9, students can pick ICT as an option where we build on the skills from KS3 and cover a range of ICT and computer science topics. At KS4, students can choose to study BTEC DIT as an option in Y10 and Y11.

How will I be assessed?

You will study 2 mandatory units and choose 1 optional unit.

There are 2 coursework units which are controlled assessments and these are done independently. There is also one exam.

What do employers think about the subject?

Increasingly, employers are asking for a qualification and/or experience in ICT. As the proportion of people working in small businesses or who are self-employed continues to grow, being a confident and able user of computer technology makes you increasingly employable.

What are the skills I will gain?

  • An understanding of the hardware used in ICT systems.
  • A range of creative software skills including graphic design.
  • You will learn how to successfully manage an IT Media Project.
  • Learn about Laws that affect the use of IT in the real world, such as Data Protection and Copyright.
  • Understand how to use IT Hardware and Software in order to make Multimedia products such as Videos, Graphics, Websites and Interactive Products.
