A PROBLEM-hit Rotherham comprehensive has bounced back and clocked up its best ever GCSE results.
Thrybergh Comprehensive is still receiving special help after its performance was slammed by Ofsted inspectors a year ago.
But today the school was celebrating after nearly 40 per cent of pupils gained five or more passes at A* to C grade.
The figure is 10 per cent higher than the school's previous best performance.
Headteacher David Pridding said: "Ever since I arrived at the school last year, I have talked of Thrybergh becoming an outstanding school and the results at both GCSE and SATs show that we are well on the way to turning that vision into reality.
"At Key Stage Three the number of students achieving a Level 5+ in Science went up by 15per cent, Maths by 17 per cent and English by 14 per cent.
"This success has been a team effort with parents and staff working together to help the students achieve the best results the school has ever achieved.
"Most importantly I know that success breeds success and that Thrybergh Comprehensive School has a bright future."
Many Rotherham schools are still to announce their results - but early indications were that many have done better than last year.
Catharine Kinsella, Head of Learning Services at Rotherham Council, said: "We are still waiting for some of our results to come in.
So far the initial returns are very promising with some schools seeing their pass rates rise substantially.
"Hopefully that trend will continue and we will see another high level of passes to follow on from those the borough's students achieved in last week's A-levels.
"Among the individual performances of schools we have seen a fantastic result at Thrybergh Comprehensive. Pope Pius X High School has also seen a 14 per cent rise, Wales High School is up nine per cent and Swinton's pass rate is up by six per cent at grades A* to C.
"Our congratulations go to all those students who have received their GCSE results for their hard work and our thanks also go to the parents, teachers and staff who have supported them through this time."
But according to one teacher's union celebrations should not hide the fact that many children are still leaving school without proper skills.
The Association of Teachers and Lecturers are calling on the government to make 'fundamental' changes to the curriculum so school leavers are ready for work.
Last year it was estimated as many as one student in 10 in Rotherham left school with fewer than five GCSEs. One pupil in 10 across Yorkshire had no passes at all.
Today's results will be a major test for the government's controversial academies programme which aims to dramatically improve pupil's performance in deprived areas such as Rotherham.
ATL general secretary Mary Bousted said: "All too often the image of today's youngsters is blackened by the misbehaviour of a minority. But today's results show we have a nation of hard-working, highly ambitious and responsible young people."
