Enterprise projects running at Thrybergh School and Sports College
Amanda France – Co-ordinator for work related learning, enterprise and healthy schools.
Y8 Fashion project
Mrs Oliver has been working with Y8s for six weeks on their project. During form times students have learned about different fabrics, where they come from, how they are made and the impact of the clothing industry on pollution, energy use and ethics. Students made the decision to make a garment for their fashion show by recycling an existing old garment into a funky fashion item. This culminated in a successful fashion show on Wednesday 15 November as part of Enterprise week. All Y8 students were involved in either designing, making or modelling the garments on show.
Y10 students were in charge of make-up and hair and also baked and sold refreshments at the event.
Y9 Creative Cards project
The Crazy Card Factory is an Enterprise Project that has grown out of a form project throughout Y8. Kirsty Jarvis, Leanne Gurner and Gail Sparks have extended this project further and have set up their own enterprise project in school. They spend each lunch period making hand made cards to sell to other students and staff within school. They are learning about different techniques and also about the business side of their project and have been spending time with business professionals to help them along the way.
Y10 – Green enterprise project
With support from Sheffield Wildlife Trust’s ‘Hearts and Minds’ project (funded through HLF), a group of Y10 volunteers have set up their green enterprise project. Led by Y10 Manager, Mrs Brookes and Enterprise Co-ordinator, Miss France the group are looking at ways to cultivate a piece of land at the side of the school to make it look better and be more productive. Plans are to grow a number of different plants and vegetables which can be sold to bring an income into the project. This project will also look at encouraging wildlife into the garden and improving the biodiversity that may have been affected through years of industry and more recent building work. Students are taking on roles of business managers, design and planning, and groundwork department and are currently planning and researching their project.
TEC – Enterprise
Mr Swann and students designing bespoke items (keyrings, name plaques, clocks) to sell made out of acrylics and using skills developed in Technology classes.
Y10 Rocket car project
Mr Johnson is running a community project where students and their families attend a course to learn about designing, prototyping and testing a product. The cars will be designed in teams and the finished products will be raced. This project will encourage team work and development of social and academic skills within school and at home.
Y10 Beauty School project
Mrs Johnson set up and ran this project where students attended a 10 week course in basic beauty therapy. The students will offer treatments to members of the school and support school events (see Y8 project above). Students will be responsible for their training, practice, salon, accounts and decision making. The salon is self funding and the long term plan is to develop and help other initiatives within the school. Initial progress report is that this enterprising project has already raised £500!
Y11 – Bullying Action Group
Set up earlier this year, the Bullying Action Group (BAG) have successfully run a week of assemblies in school to raise awareness of bullying issues. The group made 2 short films during summer school and one member has also written and recorded a song which has made it through to the final of the R Factor at Hellaby Hall (17 November). More.. .
A core of BAG are currently studying for a qualification in Effective Listening Skills (they now have completed this Level 2 Award). They have started to run peer mentoring sessions after school where other students with worries can make an appointment in person, by email or MSN to come in and discuss.
Anti-bullying week – BAG held a non uniform day (come dressed in something blue) for ‘Blue Friday’ a non- uniform day where both staff and students will donate to come to school dressed in blue to show their commitment and support for anti-bullying.
BAG’s work will be highlighted at the Anti-bullying conference on 22nd May. Miss France to attend and take a film of the students, who will be sitting their GCSE English on that day.
Y11 – School yearbook
Students from Y11 are working on getting together a yearbook to celebrate their time at Thrybergh Comprehensive. (I need more detail about this – Mr Storer/Mrs Ritchie will know)
Girls into Enterprise summer school
A group of Y9 girls will take part in a summer school during the last week of term. Four other local schools are taking part. The girls will take part in lots of activities aimed in developing their enterprise skills, build confidence and develop a project linked to the school. More details to follow.
Big Boost
Students recently worked in teams to develop enterprise projects with a community focus to put in a bid for Big Boost. This is funded through the Princes Trust and Lottery. Schools can apply for up to £1000 to help with a new project. Lots of ideas were developed including ‘Mission Impossible’, ‘Digital photography’ ‘Airbourne Challenge and sculpture and art work. Seven bids in total were submitted. Fingers crossed!
