Mathematics faculty consists of 5 full time teachers, a full time level 3 Teaching Assistant. At present there are 2 TLR holders in the faculty, Mr S Harrison (Faculty Leader) & Mrs J Uzun (National Challenge Mathematics Champion).
In years 8 – 11 pupils are taught in 5 sets based on ability, effort and attainment. Year 7 has 6 sets, 5 of which are ability based and a 6th Transition Group taught by Mrs T Reynolds and is made up of pupils that have been identified as having specific needs regarding the transition from Primary to Secondary Education.
At Key Stage 3 pupil progress is assessed at the end of the school year using SATs Examinations from previous years. They are also monitored throughout the year by a series of smaller tests at the end of each half term.
At Key Stage 4 students follow the Two Tier AQA Specification B (Modular) GCSE programme of study. The Scheme of Assessment comprises 3 separate modules as detailed below:
Module 1: Handling Data (18% of total assessment)
Module 3: Mainly Number with some Algebra included at Higher Tier (27% of total assessment)
Module 5: Mainly Algebra, Shape, Space & Measures with some number included (55% of total assessment)
As Mathematics is a core curriculum subject all students in the school are required to follow Mathematics courses.
In both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students receive 3 hours of Mathematics teaching per week. Mathematics is taught in a newley refurbished school that consists of 5 teaching rooms. The faculty has access to 3 ICT suites consisting of between 27-30 computers in each room all supported by Interactive whiteboards. Maths is made enjoyable and motivating using many resources. We have interactive whiteboards in all classroms with Boardworks software installed.
