Education minister drops in to discover secrets of school's success
National education supremo Ed Balls popped into Rotherham to visit a school which has met targets he set in a controversial move last summer.
The Secretary of State toured Thrybergh School & Sports College to see how standards are improving.
Mr Balls annoyed some headteachers by placing secondaries producing poor results in a new National Challenge programme.
The schools included must have more than 30 per cent of their pupils passing five GCSEs at good grades - including English and maths - by 2011.
Mr Balls joined MP John Healey at the school and asked staff the secret of their success. Thrybergh was among the top 100 schools in the country for sustained improvement in January.
Results for 2008 showed pupils getting five or more GCSEs at A*-C grade including English and maths had more than tripled in the last three years, from ten per cent in 2005 to 33 per cent in 2008.
