Personal Development and Well being
In 2003, the Government published a green paper called Every Child Matters. The Every Child Matters (ECM) green paper identified the five outcomes that are most important to children and young people:

  • Being healthy: enjoying good physical and mental health and living a healthy lifestyle

  • Staying safe: being protected from harm and neglect; growing up able to look after themselves

  • Enjoying and achieving: getting the most out of life and developing the skills for adulthood

  • Making a positive contribution: to the community and to society and not engaging in anti-social or offending behavior

  • Achieving economic wellbeing: overcoming socio-economic disadvantages to achieve full potential in life

The five outcomes are universal ambitions for every child and young person, whatever their background or circumstances. Improving outcomes for all children and young people underpins all of the development and work within our school.

The outcomes are mutually reinforcing. For example, children and young people learn and thrive when they are healthy, safe and engaged; and the evidence shows clearly that educational achievement is the most effective route out of poverty. Here at Thrybergh, we take these outcomes as being part of our moral purpose.

Within this area of Personal Development and Well being, the following aspects of school life play a significant part:

Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE), which is now known as PCD (Personal and Cultural Development)
Citizenship
Healthy Schools
SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Learning).

Another aspect to this whole area is Student Voice or Voice of the Learner. Student voice is a means of involving students in the organizational structure of the school and engaging them in the school community. At its best it is an effective way to help transform education from the ‘bottom up’, through the co-construction of learning. To this end Year 7 during the month of October took part in an online survey with regards to the Every Child Matters outcomes. The results of this survey will form the basis of our constant self evaluation of our provision for Personal Development and Well being. We will be providing regular updates of the different activities which we will be undertaking and thank you in advance for your continued support as we work together for all our students.
