Careers With Geography!

The study of Geography will equip you with invaluable skills.

The range of skills that geographers acquire are much sought-after by employers and geography graduates have access to a wide variety of careers. Geography degrees provide experience of a variety of general skills including written and oral presentation, teamwork, problem-solving, numeracy, computing, graphics, mapping, survey methods and research skills. Geographers are adaptable and can be easily trained, while their broad understanding and range of approaches to the world and its problems are relevant to many different jobs.

Nationally, geography has one of the best graduate employment records in the country.

Many graduates enter management with companies such as Unilever, Nissan and BP; some become accountants, bankers, computer programmers or research assistants. Others specialise in particular areas of geography by taking an MSc or PhD, and an increasing number travel abroad, in some cases doing voluntary work, before seeking employment. The excellent employment record which geography graduates have is a sign of the flexibility and professionalism which a geography degree develops.

For graduates entering the financial sector, for example, geography is the fourth most common first degree subject (trailing only the more directly connected courses such as economics, business and management studies).

Geography graduates are employed in a wide range of occupations. These include:

  • Advertising.

  • Diplomatic service.

  • Education.

  • Environmental agencies.

  • Finance (accountancy, banking, management consultancy, financial administration).

  • Land management.

  • Law.

  • Marketing.

  • Sales.

  • Social/health services.
