Welcome to English at Thrybergh
Over the past four years the English Faculty has developed a varied and engaging curriculum for all year groups within school.
During Key Stage 3 (years 7 – 9) students are involved in activities which combine traditional English skills with the revised PLTS (Personal Learning & Thinking Skills) curriculum:
Cultures Project; since 2007 November/December of Year 7 have been devoted to the creative task of staging a performance in the school hall. This show is linked to several GCSE poems, and incorporates a range of cultures from around the world. The dance element of the performance also links in with the school’s specialist status.
Apprentice Project; in January, all Year 8 students are challenged to form mini-companies, then design, create and market a sports drink. This project aims to develop our students skills as ‘self-managers’ and, yet again, creates strong links with the specialist status as a Sports College.
Following the abolition of Key Stage 3 SAT tests, Year 9 has become a transitional period for students focused on creating a smooth move from KS3 to KS4 and the requirements of the GCSE syllabus. This will involve students honing their examination skills in preparation for their end of KS3 exams, followed by the introduction of GCSE work post-Easter.
Throughout Key Stage 3 students will develop and refine skills in all three areas of English: Reading; Writing and Speaking & Listening. Our aim is to fully prepare all students for the demands of GCSE English; GCSE Literature; further education and the workplace.
At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 – 11) students are taught in line with the AQA GCSE syllabus. In addition, they are offered to continual support to ensure all students achieve, or exceed, their target grade(s).
September 2010 will see the implementation of a revised AQA syllabus which allows even more opportunities to extend and develop the English skills of TSSC students.
Extra-curricular activities offered within the faculty include:
Student Journalism; The Rotherham Book Awards and national poetry competitions.
