Bolsover Castle - Year 7s Cross Curricular Day

A cross curricular day was held for at Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire on Friday 28th May 2010 with a focus on Technology, Humanities and Outdoor Education..

Students at Bolsover Castle

Technology Curriculum

Students were involved in a 6 week project to make medieval trebuchets, leather cuffs, banquet food, and coats of arms.

The students worked in groups or individually to create a product dependant upon the technology carousel area they were in.

The activity day included half a day at the castle with participation activities and a tour of the ruins. A medieval stained glass window, shortbread biscuit and juice was particularly enjoyable..

Humanities Curriculum

The medieval times were studied including The Battle of Hastings in 1066, Black Death, Domesday Book, and peasant life stories.

They also held a castle building competition using cardboard to create large 3D sculptures of their own castle ideas.

The day at Bolsover Castle was spent working in teams in activities such as Archery, tug of war, damsel in distress and stock soaking. Each group had a tour of the grounds and entrance to the renovated castle area.

A picnic lunch was enjoyed in the gardens and medieval souvenirs were purchased from the shop.

English Heritage commented on our pupil’s behaviour stating they were very well behaved and they represented Thrybergh School and Sports College well.

A great day enjoyed by all staff and students!
